about

The ngbindi, or earth bow, is an occasional instrument, usually constructed on the spot from simple materials: a sapling and a piece of twine. The ngbindi in this recording was made by tying the twine
(made from the fibers of a forest vine) at one end to a sapling bent over into the shape of a bow. At the other end the twine was attached to a thick plate of bark, which was then buried in a shallow hole to secure the twine to the ground. The ngbindi has the sound of a deep bass. Its pitch is altered by changing the tautness of the string, either pushing slightly on the sapling (higher pitch) or pulling on it (lower pitch). The range of any particular earth bow is limited, and this has led to a very distinctive repertoire of short bass riffs with a jazzlike syncopation. I have only ever heard two or three different riffs at Yandoumbé, but no doubt there are others. The ngbindi is not an instrument I have had the fortune to record often. In the recording a young man named Ngbanda and several teenage boys took me to a unique place in the forest where the ground itself is like a drumskin,
reverberating with a deep keeng! to even the softest footsteps. Here they set up the earth bow, played by Ngbanda. The teenagers accompanied with earth percussion-pounding the earth with fists. Occasionally the sounds of a net hunt can be heard in the distance.
