about

The mobio is an end-blown flute with four holes. It is almost always played at night, usually as the player wanders through the village. Yandoumbé has only three accomplished players that I know about, although it is possible that there are others who simply have never played in front of me. The selection presented here was recorded in a forest camp in 1995. The mobio is played by Gongé, who got up sometime after midnight to serenade our camp for an hour. I roused myself from bed to record him from several yards away.
