about

Enyomo songs have a melody/rhythm division similar to other music forms in which drums are used (boyobi, ejengi, mangissa, djoboko, etc.). In the first part the melody is sung; this is eboka (an
important baAka word encompassing both “music” and “dance” in its meaning). In the second part, melody gives way to various rhythmic cries, each with its own periodicity; this “rhythm section” is called esimé. The cries and rhythms of the enyomo esimé are unique to enyomo, very
different from the cries heard in boyobi or ejengi. Enyomo dances in the daytime, like Ejengi, or on nights when there is lots of moonlight. In the
recording presented here, made late in the morning in a forest camp in 1996, the drumming was done on aluminium pots, since membrane drums were unavailable.
